Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) also known as ‘true cinnamon’ is popular for it’s rich, sweet-smelling fragrance that instantly enhances the flavor and taste of any dish that it is added to. It’s unique smell that is generally associated with warm drinks in the Fall, is irreplaceable, especially by Cassia which is an inferior alternative to Ceylon Cinnamon. Sri Lanka is the proud exporter of Ceylon Cinnamon and caters to 90% of the World’s demand for this spice. Apart from its use in the culinary industry, the ‘Queen of all spices’ is also used as a medicine.
Ceylon Cinnamon is used in the culinary industry as a food ingredient to uplift the flavor and aroma with usually a sweet sensation and due to its plenty of health benefits. It is often used in baked goods, candies, snack bars, bagels, pastries and other confectionery items as well as in a variety of healthy beverages around the world such as commercially manufactured tea and coffee. Ceylon cinnamon is also used to preserve food and is a common spice in ‘spice blends’ usually found in mixes such as Garam Masala, Golden pumpkin spice and chai mixes to flavor curries, biriyani and beverages.
Ceylon Cinnamon is used for cosmetics such as in creams due to its skin benefits. It is highly sought after for soap-making, bath bombs as well as for perfumes due to its therapeutic features and great aroma. Usually, it is found in natural fragrances as well as in shampoos. Cinnamon oils and sprays are used as air-fresheners to keep out bad odor.
